Welcome to Escaleras

Escaleras means stairs.  The rainforest steps make their way down to the Pacific Ocean filled with streams, plants, trees, animals and birds.  Those stairs are dotted with beautiful homes filled with good friends and neighbors.

This website is primarily used for road information but a few other reference topics are included.  If you have suggestions, please reach out to one of the Asociación members.

There is a very active and well organized and managed WhatsApp group for the community.  If you live in the area, please contact Michaelyn Vandiver to be added to the group.

Escaleras Association of Neighbors
LA ASOCIACIÓN VECINOS DE ESCALERAS

It became apparent to the Escaleras Roads committee that a formal association was required to get help from the municipality and to have a non-personal bank account and to reduce risk and liability.  Therefore, the Escaleras Roads committee moved quickly in early 2023 to meet the minimum requirements necessary to get an association started.  The paperwork was finally approved by the government in December of 2023, giving us a voice with the municipality.  It is not a formal ADI because the requirements for an ADI are more difficult and time consuming.  We are working to become a non-profit organization so that we do not have to pay IVA or Income tax on any money that we carry over from one year to the next.  That takes 3 years at a minimum.  If you are interested in volunteering or helping, please contact the President.

Intent of the Association:

  • Focus on keeping our roads in safe and good condition, continuing the work of the Escaleras Roads committee.

  • It is possible in the future that the association could be expanded in membership and areas of focus, but that is not the intent at this time.

  • Currently the road maintenance only covers the roads marked in blue on the map:  Escaleras (from bottom of Jolly Roger side around and to Dominicalito) and San Martin Sur, and the top of Pacific Edge road.

  • The area covered by the association includes anywhere the Escaleras road (Jolly Roger portion, top portion, Pozo Azul portion), San Martin Sur, Pacific Edge road, concrete and Toucan road, and Costa Verde Estates.

Founding Members and officers:

A minimum of 10 people are required and 6 officers from among those members.  We all had to be available to sign the document at the same time, which we did on June 8th, 2023.  Final approval by government was Dec 2023.
